Celina Jaitly welcomes Supreme Court’s verdict on passive euthanasia

Celina Jaitly welcomes Supreme Court’s verdict on passive euthanasia

In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of India made passive euthanasia permissible in the country. While several celebrities from the television industry have upheld the decision, stars from the tinsel town are in favour of the verdict too. Fukrey Returns actress Richa Chadha welcomed the decision of the Apex Court but she hopes that the new law doesn’t get misused. Like Richa, Celina Jaitly too has come out in support of the new law. We reached out to the Apna Sapna Money Money actress and here’s what she said about the SC verdict. “Like all things that deal with life and death, euthanasia is a controversial subject and my opinion may vary from those of others. In my personal opinion it’s a welcome decision having known near and dear ones suffering for years without hope or consciousness solely on ventilators, what we do not realise is that human life cannot occur without death. Therefore for those that argue that every man has the fundamental and legal right to live, they unknowingly also agree that every man has the fundamental right to die if and when under intense pain and suffering which is effectively forcing them to live a life without what they believe is their dignity. Everyone has a right to a good death, therefore a good death must not be denied to those who want one.vIt is important to note that not all cases of withdrawing or withholding life-prolonging treatment are cases of passive euthanasia hence strict guidelines that will govern the same are very important now that it is permitted as in our country it may be misappropriated and misused too,” Celina Jaitly told Zoom TV Digital exclusively.

Richa Chadha, too has backed the decision. “I personally feel if a person who’s terminally ill would know the suffering they’re going through. Being terminally ill is the worst thing that can happen to someone and if they do wish to willingly go through passive euthanasia, is one’s personal choice. We are our own decision makers and in such a situation an exemption or a logically calculated decision would and may make sense, perhaps not to us but to the person who is suffering. My only hope is that this new law isn’t misused by relatives and acquaintances,” the Fukrey Returns actor told us exclusively. (Also read: After Silk Smitha, a biopic on south adult star Shakeela )

We contacted English Vinglish actor Adil Hussain for his comments but he refused to make any. “I am not sure if I can talk on this subject. ! It’s a very grey area,” the Parched star conveyed over a text message.

Besides Richa and Celina, a host of television actors have welcomed the Apex Court’s decision. Rithvik Dhanjani, Hina Khan, Karan Patel, Rohit Roy, Arjun Bijlani and others spoke to Zoom TV Digital and voiced their opinion.
