Singing for the LGBT cause was an exhilarating experience: Celina Jaitly

Celina Jaitly might have been away from Bollywood for some time now, but she has been actively involved in the LGBT cause. Celina, who was appointed the United Nations Equality Champion in 2013, is now all set for a worldwide release of a Bollywood-style human rights video spreading awareness about the equal rights of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender) community. The video, with which Celina also makes her singing debut, is all about love, warmth, acceptance and mutual respect for all.

Talking about her experience of her singing debut (the song Uthe Sab Ke Kadam from the film Baton Baton Mein, which has been re-worked by Neeraj Sridhar of Bombay Viking), Celina said, “I was surprised when this offer came my way. I only did a rough cut for the song, but it was readily accepted almost immediately. And the way it has been accepted by everyone associated with this cause is really exciting. I am a firm believer in the fact that if you work towards doing a good deed, god helps in every way possible, and this is what I have experienced.”

Sounding excited about her attempt to create awareness about the noble cause, Celina said, “It has been an exhilarating experience working with names like Ricky Martin, recent Grammy award-winning rap stars Ryan and Mackelmore, the U S indie band Fun, Brazilian pop star Daniela Mercury and the South African singer and activist Yvonne Chaka Chaka. To be working alongside such phenomenal artists and connecting with them for a noble cause meant a lot for me.”

And ask her why a Bollywood theme song for an international campaign, and she says, “Bollywood is one of the most promising industry worldwide. It’s unbelievable that even people sitting in the UN know a lot about Bollywood and they themselves came up with idea of doing this kind of a video as it will have a wide appeal, not just the young generation but people across all generation will connect to it since Bollywood appeals each and all.”

She adds that she is hopeful that things will change for the better and their efforts will make a difference in the life of the people who have been at the receiving end for a long time now.

The song will go on air on April 26 and the official release of the video is slated for April 30.
