Paranormal Activity: Part 1

Paranormal Activity: Part 1

Have you in your life ever experienced something that you truly cannot explain?? It could be anything … “Any phenomenon that in one or more respects exceeds the limits of what is deemed physically possible according to current scientific assumptions.”…. What we call as Paranormal.

As I mentioned in my last Piece “On the railroads of time into past” – ever since I can remember I know I have always had a very keen interest in the “paranormal”, and matters of “the beyond”. This particular “piece” is dedicated to my years of fascination with “All that exists beyond the realm of human existence and scientific reasoning.”

So .. before we delve any further let us see where the word “Paranormal” actually originates from. The actual word is derived from the Latin use of the prefix para meaning “outside or beyond” what is considered normal. Many people associate the term paranormal as only dealing with haunting’ s and ghosts. However, the paranormal also includes subjects considered to be outside the scope of parapsychology including UFOs, cryptozoology, telepathy, ESP, faith healing, clairvoyance, and many other subjects. Oh by the way Cryptozoology is the study and pursuit of elusive animals whose existence is not acknowledged by the scientific mainstream. Examples include Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, dragons ,unicorns, YETI, werewolves .. etc.

Since Paranormal phenomenon is not generally accepted as real by traditional scientists.. It leaves some self proclaimed researchers like “Yours truly” to continue in this pursuit of “the beyond”. Since science needs evidence to be reproducible in a controlled environment, the paranormal science is considered pseudo-scientific (not a real science). However even then reports and many inexplicable incidents in our lives and from all around the world keep us mesmerized by this so called Pseudo-Science.

Having Lived most of my life in the beautiful Kumaon and Garwhal hills it seemed to me all my life I was living in the hub of all the quaint unexplained phenomenons. Was it the peoples way to amuse their simple mountain dwelling by vivid imaginations or was there really something more that the rare mountain air was harbouring? Besides the regular mortal of a man-eating tiger of the Kumaon, paranormal stories poured into our parents evening sessions by the fire place daily. I remember this quaint beautiful 150 year old British army villa we stayed in – straight out of “The Others”. I remember as a little toddler very vividly when my father was deployed for ‘Operation Blue Star” me and my mother and brother lived in this most haunted property in the entire cantonment. I remember senior officers wives being very afraid for my young mother to live with her two toddlers all by herself in this most haunted beautiful villa.
One cold karva chauth night we went with our mother to the fast breaking assembly of army wives only to return to a most terrified house keeper who saw a woman with a “pooja thali” walk down the spiral staircase 3 feet floating in air. That was the last we saw of the housekeeper “and” the ghostly appartion too. The ghost never appeared again but many new creaks and weird sounds, displaced furniture (which we could owe to the age of the old villa walls and old wooden floor boards maybe?) but then also unexplained tragic incidents started taking place for during our tenure at that residence we only saw some or the other sort of tragedy at home. Maybe it was all to do with rumours or may be it was a “place memory”, which is like a recording of a past event that has imprinted itself on the environment.

Or maybe On the contrary we were many of the people who exaggerate their own perceptions, either when visiting/residing at a place which people believe to be haunted, or when visiting a site which they know unpleasant historical events have occurred. Certain images such as paintings and movies might “program” a person to automatically associate a certain structure or area with ghosts and this particular residence of ours had many such motives like old curios, paintings etc which could be causing the ghost effect.

Having had an avid interest in books as I grew in age (maybe wisdom?) I began to read a lot on the matter of entities, ghosts, spirits, angels, feng shui, etc. However, I would like to point out that at the same I time was a pure science student with a mind which always first tried to reason with what the laws of science dictate. So I would spend days reading on any incident I had heard of and somehow science always had its answers to the paranormal. While the finding the 3 people at the foot of my bed every morning around 4 am were explained by the sleep cycle theory so was a series of finding my self floating near the fan incidents explained by the same. Every time I thought ..”WOW ..I stumbled upon my real experience” there was always some or the other sceptic from the field of science proving me wrong in my follow up research .

I stumbled upon very disillusioning scientific explanations to my “paranormal experiences”. Here are some common explanations:

Psychological phenomenon of pareidolia (seeing recognizable shapes and patterns in every day objects ie: face of Mars, Rorschach inkblots) may cause people to perceive human-like faces or figures in the otherwise mundane surroundings of their environments, particularly in conditions where vision is partly obscured, as in a dark corridor or at night. Skeptics also apply this theory to EVP’s (when anomalous voices, often purported to be of supernatural origin, are reportedly heard on audio recordings.)

Hypnopompia happens after waking and also coincides with sleep paralysis, which is taken by the patient as part of a dream. Hypnopompia makes the patient feel as if he or she is falling/ flying. (Explains my out of body experience..).The sufferer also thinks there is an alien presence in the surroundings. Sound waves with frequencies lower than 20 hertz are called infrasound and are normally inaudible, but British scientists Richard Lord and Richard Wiseman have concluded that infrasound can cause humans to feel a “presence” in the room, or unexplained feelings of anxiety or dread.Ghosts are often associated with a chilling sensation, but a natural response to fear is hair raising, which can be mistaken for a chill.Something that is called Peripheral vision is very sensitive to motion, but does not contain much color or the ability to sharply distinguish shapes. Any random motion outside the focused view can create a strong illusion of an eerie figure.I know my words sound that of a sceptic but this is just part 1, the part where i put up the most common arguments against all extraordinary , I want people to know that the last of lives mysteries is not yet solved .. there is more to ‘this” .. to “us” … to our ‘world” and ‘universe’…”nothing is impossible .”.This particular article is for the ones who question and are sceptical..

However friends … there is more to this ..

Next time around will be the real action .. where there is no explanation for all the extraordinary .. stay tuned with an open mind and an open heart because don’t forget there was a time when flying in a flying machine was considered a super natural phenomenon and curing people with the concept of antibiotics meant death at the stake by burning.

Do remember electromagnetic fields (EMFs) at one time {EMFs} were debatable from a scientific perspective but later were proven to be real and is currently accepted by scientific and medical communities. Preparing you for the main masala post this snack for the sceptics .. I would like to say- “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” ~Socrates~PS- Do feel free to leave behind “your unexplained stories” would love to get close to the “ultimate case” …

Stay tuned,
yours truly…
