Celina Jaitley: Fitness is the balance of the body and the mind

“It is important to have a solid foundation of habits that gives one a healthy body. Fitness is nurturing both your body and mind and giving yourself the very best you can.


I am an ardent follower of yoga as it is the most far-reaching holistic workout I have ever come across. On a purely physical level, yoga works on all the organs and muscles of the body systematically.

However I like alternating yoga with dancing (classical) as it gives a good break to the everyday workout. No matter what, I keep 45 minutes aside every day for yoga or dancing. I have a personal trainer for yoga who keeps me motivated as well.


What you eat and drink affects every part of your body and reflects how you feel about yourself. I follow a very balanced diet of 6-8 small meals a day which keep my metabolic rate up, and I am never hungry so I do not end up over-eating. This sort of diet is ideal for people who want to lose weight but only under a doctor’s supervision. It is also important to follow a detox plan before starting any new diet as you cannot expect miracle results if your body is laden with toxins.

I always take out time to eat good healthy food. Diet is not about deprivation. It’s about providing your body with good fuel for optimum performance.

Breakfast is usually eggs and mushroom on rye toast / daliya or eggs or steamed idli or Chinese congee or dosas. Sometimes I have gluten free cereals with soya milk and a fruit smoothie.

I also have a glass of fresh juice of wheat grass or Aloe vera for a burst of energy.
My mid-morning snack includes unsalted nuts (almonds, walnuts, melon seeds) with a glass of buttermilk or green tea. Sometimes its fresh fruit, rice cakes with hummus and carrot sticks.

My lunch mostly consists of a nutritious soup and a salad. I like to alternate it with a healthy Indian meal of dal, whole / multigrain roti, and leafy vegetable with chicken or fish. Occasionally, I like to indulge in brown rice and fish.

I combat the mid-afternoon energy slump with unsalted seeds / nuts, a cup of regular tea, fresh dhokla, or sprout salad. Sometimes treat myself to paani-puri, which I love.

Supper consist of lean meats, fish and eggs. I rarely eat post 9pm in the night unless I am shooting all night long. If I am hungry, I have a glass of warm skimmed milk with a dash of Horlicks.


Meditation is the master stress reliever. I use various techniques for meditation that includes breathing, mantra meditation, playing a musical instrument, or listening to relaxing music.

Good sleep is extremely vital to combat stress. I make sure I have 7-8 hours of sleep. Unwinding includes spending quality time with family and friends.

I love to read everything from Asterix comics to Emily Bronte. I love music and like to spend my free time playing the piano. My other hobby is researching paranormal occurrences and anything to do with the world of parapschycology, occult and the unexplained.


I am a spiritual person. I am fascinated by Scientology, Buddhism and Zoroastrianism. I light a diya in my temple at home everyday and also visit the church to light a candle occasionally. The two books that have inspired me are The Art of War by Sun Tzu and The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.”
