People are still ignorant about gay community: Celina Jaitly

Actress Celina Jaitly has pledged her support for free and equal by becoming the United Nations equality champions recently. It is an awareness to bring thoughtfulness towards the homophobic community of the world.

celina-newTalking about the campaign, Celina says, “It is very sad to see how gay people survive in a closeted relationship and are forced to marry. Their sexual preferences have never been given importance and it affects their lives as well. We will work together with the United Nations and will raise awareness about gay people, their sexual preferences being given priorities and personal choices and how they can be prevented from being social victims. There is a lot of ignorance regarding the community which still thinks homosexuality as a disease. The campaign is about generating as much information as possible.”

The actress, who has been the face of LGBT rights for quite some time now, feels that the situation has improved a little in metros. She adds, “Now things are slightly better in Mumbai and other metro cities. People have learnt to be more tolerant. The gay community people are also being embraced with open arms. They are allowed to work, allowed to rent apartments as well. But these minimal issues should be addressed in a more proactive way. Marriage comes later. Every issue is linked. There is so much to look at. We need to address equality at workplace in a more positive way, they should not be humiliated, they should be motivated at studying. We should give the community a transgender status. It is so unfair that they have to leave their families. Gay rights are very big in UK.”

The actress will be on the same platform, along with singer Rikcy Martin and other prominent international names. Apart from her collaboration with the UN, she is back from her maternity sabbatical. “Due to professional obligations, it is difficult to get Ricky and others together. But I would surely like it if we are brought together in a platform soon. I am also a busy mother now and will return with a comedy, No Entry sequel, as comedy is my forte. I will do one or two films a year,” she signs off.
